Trulli dei Gelsomini 11

 / Ceglie Messapica

ACCOMMODATION FACILITIES – Between Cisternino and Ostuni, in the municipality of the eighteenth-century Ceglie Messapica, lies Trulli dei Gelsomini. The territory of the Itria Valley has been shaped over the centuries by peasants who transformed its appearance. Here trulli and masserie alternate with fields of olive trees and vineyards, and all together outline a unique and magical profile. Originally used as a shelter from the bad weather or as permanent house for agricultural workers, the iconic trullo is Puglia’s most beloved architectural structure. Its name derives from the Greek word trûllos “dome”, and is a type of dry stone construction, cool in summer and warm in winter thanks to the natural thermal insulation of this material.
Formed by the trulli with the typical lamia, which overlooks the private swimming pool, Trulli dei Gelsomini has been entirely renovated in full respect of the original architecture. The estate extends for 18,000 m2 and is bordered by the traditional Apulian stones. Avenues of ornamental hedges and aromatic herb bushes decorate the red earth and frame a relaxation corner covered by a pergola that overlooks a private bowling green. Guests can challenge each other in this game or enjoy a good glass of wine at the table made from an old wine press. To feel immersed in the traditions of this land and experience the warmth of its people, it is possible to request the visit of a real cheesemaker who will teach the secrets of working the hot rennet with a final tasting. Another original experience that can be enjoyed in this property is a show performed by a group of pizzica and taranta dancers in traditional clothes and costumes.

In simple and functional environments, the structure welcomes the guests in a minimalistic living room with a stone fireplace and a kitchenette. The beige tone of the stones dominates the environment and alternates with sporadic notes of color that add personality to the property. A corridor leads to the suite formed by a bathroom with shower, a bedroom with a single bed, a double bedroom with a king size bed and reading corner. The space is completed by a bathroom with shower, a second double bedroom with en suite bathroom with shower and a double bedroom with direct access to the pool area. Surrounded by comfortable sunbeds, it is perfect for finding relief from the Salento heat and letting children have fun in the tranquility of the house. This space is decorated by a covered gazebo with soft sofas, a pergola with a large table and a nearby bar counter with sink to take advantage of the pleasant outdoor Mediterranean climate.
The spacious adjacent veranda is furnished with a covered sofa area, a dining table, a working wood-burning oven and an equipped kitchen where to prepare local dishes. Not far but with an independent entrance, there is a small annex. Its external area consists of a pleasant covered loggia equipped with sofas and relaxation corners and allows complete privacy and autonomy. It consists of a kitchenette, a double bedroom, a bathroom with shower and a bedroom with a French bed perfect for hosting children.
Trulli dei Gelsomini, with its historic trulli and green spaces, perfectly summarizes the simplicity of the Apulian life style with the modern desire to escape from the chaotic daily routine.

In the Itria Valley, 12 km from the better-known Ostuni, there is one of the oldest cities of Apulia: Ceglie Messapica. Considered the gastronomic capital of Salento area with its “stacchiodde” and “strascinati”, it is perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in local traditions and charm. The medieval historic center is ramified with narrow streets and white houses that lead to Piazza del Plebiscito with its Clock Tower and the Ducal Castle. Its territory, surrounded by conical trulli and centuries-old olive groves, is populated with karst caves and archaeological areas with remains dating back to the Messapian era. Not to be missed are the suggestive Montevicoli Caves and the San Michele Cave. For sea lovers, the coasts of the Adriatic Sea can be reached in about 20 minutes, while those of the Ionian Sea in 50 minutes.
