San Michele Salentino is the northernmost town in Salento and rises over 200 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Itria Valley. In addition to the characteristic historic center, you can admire the countless natural beauties with pleasant walks in the uncontaminated nature or bike excursions.
Within a few minutes drive there’s Ceglie Messapica, one of the oldest towns in the region which boasts the recognition of land of art and food. The area is characterized by the presence of the famous trulli, farms, centuries-old olive groves and karst caves. The coast of the Adriatic Sea can be reached in about 15 minutes, with the beaches of Specchiolla, also perfect for children thanks to its shallow water area. About 15 km away there’s Ostuni, a truly charming village known as the ‘white city’ for its white lime buildings and houses. Here social life is lively and well organised; in August two famous events are organized not to be missed: the Festival Altri Tempi, with displays of ancient traditions and stands of typical food prepared by the inhabitants of the old city and La Cavalcata, a parade on horseback in honor of Sant’Oronzio, patron saint of the city.
